One of Shari's patients had developed a pressure ulcer on his stump caused from his temporary prosthetic. The patient had told Shari he wasn't able to afford his permanent prosthetic after his surgery, so he continued to wear his temporary prosthetic. The treatment plan for the patient required him to stop using his temporary prosthetic to off load his wound. He was required to use crutches to get around which caused him depression and anxiety. Shari took it upon herself to contact a local vendor to ask if they would provide a permanent prosthetic for a patient that couldn't afford his 20% portion of the expense. The vendor agreed to help him out once his wound was healed.
It's been a year since he acquired his permanent prosthetic, he recently returned to the clinic for a trauma wound to his other leg. During my assessment interview with the patient, he was telling the story of what Shari had done for him. The client became tearful and expressed that, "Shari changed my life". I asked the client if I could share his story to assist me in nominating Shari for the DAISY Award. The client was so excited to know he could show Shari his gratitude for changing his life.
Shari is a dedicated, committed wound nurse and team player, She always puts her patients and coworkers first. Shari goes the extra mile to assist in achieving her patient's goals. As her co-worker, I am honored and proud to have her on our wound team, she is a dedicated leader.
