My world was turned upside down when my doctor called and confirmed my greatest fear - I have breast cancer. He said the nurse would get me appointments right away to see a surgeon and an oncologist. The next two days were a whirlwind of consultations, examinations, evaluations, and planning sessions. I felt completely out of control. Maybe it was shock, but when people spoke to me, it was like I was in a tunnel. The next week, I received a call from my "Navigator" - Sharon. She talked to me as a friend, with a voice so tender and compassionate. She spoke in layman's terms so I could understand what was happening. She listened to everything I said, with patience and reassurance. Not once did she make me feel like I was just another patient or that I was taking up too much of her time. I know Sharon is a busy person, with many oncology patients to look after. I was very hesitant to call and ask questions, but she encouraged me to do just that. She made me feel as if I was her only patient! If I had to leave her a message, she always returned my call within 10 minutes! She initiates calls to me just to see how I'm doing or to follow up with something she was checking on for me. She reassures me that all my questions are important. All the infusion nurses are kind and compassionate, making sure all the patients are as comfortable as possible. But I feel like Sharon has gone above and beyond. She has helped me face reality - "yes, your hair will probably fall out," at the same time that she gives me hope. She is very attuned to my moods, asking questions, making suggestions, and waiting on my responses because she really wants to know the answers. Sharon is not just "doing her job," she's a friend. For these reasons and so many more, she is a true DAISY Nurse with my thanks for being who she is in a very emotional environment.
