I would like to nominate Shawana for a DAISY Award. Shawana is a staff nurse in the Emergency Department. She is also a member of the department’s Shared Governance Team. She is an extremely competent and caring nurse and consistently does whatever is necessary to make her patients stay as comfortable as possible. Recently Shawana had a patient who was in diabetic ketoacidosis. This patient was very ill and in critical condition on arrival. He was also blind and had his seeing-eye dog with him. During his stay the dog’s behavior started to change. It began pacing, truly seemed uncomfortable and began licking the floor. Shawana talked to the patient about it and learned that the dog had not eaten since the previous day and was on a restricted diet. She then contacted Dietary, obtained a bowl of rice and prepared a meal that met the dog’s diet using the meat from prepackaged meal often given to patients and visitors on the unit between preschedule mealtimes. The tech working with her prepared a bed for the dog and found a stuffed toy for it to play with as well. Nurses often think of their patient’s family members during hospital stays and inquire about their needs and comfort. This dog was not only the patient’s eyes but was also his friend and companion. Shawana’s observations and her response showed that she recognized the bond between this patient and his dog. As the dog relaxed, the patient relaxed. Both were comforted and both were well cared for.
