Their empathy, determination, and teamwork were endless.
I would like to recognize Shawna Cook on behalf of an individual who is diagnosed with profound IDD and lives within the care of a local facility. This individual is non-verbal and has several GI issues and is unable to express what exactly he is feeling. Due to being non-verbal, he expresses pain in a more physical manner. Where most doctors or nurses at this point would chalk his behaviors up to just that . . behaviors, Shawna and the nurse practitioner had such compassion for E and went above and beyond in order to assist him to get the full care that he needs and deserves. After diagnostic testing, he received a new diagnosis. At that point, it was decided due to his disabilities and other diagnosis that he would not be able to undergo needed procedures to qualify him for a medication that would significantly improve his quality of life. Both Shawna and the nurse practitioner reached out an uncountable amount of times to assist this individual to get approved for this much-needed medication. All while continuing to update the care team at his home on where they were in the process almost daily. Their empathy, determination, and teamwork were endless. After almost 3 months of diagnostic testing, battling with insurance, and other obstacles they were able to assist with getting him approved for the medication. Their compassion and determination will truly make a tremendous impact on his quality of life. They looked outside of the box and spent more than just their 15-minute appointment slot thinking and caring for him. They truly had the no patient left behind mindset. They did more for this individual in 3 months than any provider has been able to do for him in his entire lifespan.
