Shay's patient had the misfortune of having to spend 2.5 weeks in Trauma ICU 2 due to his lung function and inability to wean from the vent. Those 2.5 weeks were brightened on the nights that Shay was his nurse. Although on the vent, J was fully awake and aware. Shay communicated with him at his level. She was reliable for him which was important. She tended quickly and efficiently to J's medical needs. Even on busy nights she made him feel like he was her only patient. J is a 22-year-old college athlete who is scared to death being stuck in a body he has no control over. Shay helped him focus on the things he could control, his breathing and his mind. When I asked him why Shay deserves this award he said "For everything she's done for me. She made me feel important and gave me hope".
