Upon my arrival, I was extremely upset. I had left another facility after a scheduled infusion that I get weekly. I had sat there for 4 hours, and the staff had not started my infusion. I have a rare genetic kidney disease. Shea was a wonderful listener and offered emotional support and reassurance. She checked on me routinely and made me feel like a human and not a diagnosis. Shea's ability, by definition, under transference, she has forever changed my thought that compassion is not dead in the medical world, even in a busy ER. As providers, we should start and treat the patient, listen to and educate the patient so they can feel like they have some control over their plan of care and treatment. Treat the patient and you win every time.
