This is a story of exceptional care, professionalism, and dedication provided to my wife by Sheila Chucta DNP, RN, CCRN, ACNS-BC at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center's Cardio Vascular Intensive Care Unit.
In order to tell the story, some background on my wife's journey from two double lung transplants, strokes, emergency surgeries, and various infections and bouts with pneumonia.
-Diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis and started receiving treatments from the OSU pulmonary team
-After 6 years of treatment, it was decided that the best course of action was a bi-lateral lung transplant.
-In 2015 received her first lung transplant
-Due to rejection, a second double lung transplant was performed in 2017.
-Suffered a stroke and lost her eyesight.
-A few weeks later contacted C-DIFF and emergency surgery was performed which resulted in her losing her colon, spleen, and part of her pancreas.
This is where Sheila Chucta entered the picture. Sheila took charge of my wife's rehab and did everything she could to make it happen. Sheila contacted Urban Zen to obtain the aroma oils to help with relaxation. Sheila contacted the hospital administration and convinced them that procuring a Kreg bed would help my wife gain strength quicker than normal therapy. In addition, Sheila also contacted the Library of Congress National Library Service for the blind and physically handicapped and procured books on tape and various other items to help work through the loss of eyesight. But more important than acquiring the tools, Sheila actually conducted the daily rehab sessions, scheduled the sessions when the family was in the room so we too could see my wife's progress. Sheila also instructed nurses on the use of the equipment so everyone could work with her.
Through Sheila's determination, dedication, compassionate care and doing "Whatever it Takes" to help my wife to build enough strength over a 3 month period, she was able to walk those 15 steps out of her room and into the hall of the ICU. Words cannot adequately express my sincere gratitude for all Sheila did for my wife. Sheila is a true DAISY Nurse.
