She went the extra mile and helped this patient.
Sherika was taking care of a young girl who was on a 1:1 safety companion for suicidal ideation. The patient was not troublesome and very quiet. The patient seemed withdrawn from the world and was sitting in the hallway. Sherika was concerned about the patient, so she went up to the patient and asked her the details that led to her being suicidal. The patient shared with her that she recently came to the United States from India through marriage. Her husband abandoned her weeks after she came and she had no place to go, no source of communication with anyone, and no income to support herself. Sherika offered for the patient to make a phone call, but the patient had no one in the United States to call. The only person the patient knew and had contact information for was her dad back home. Sherika kept thinking of how to help this patient through her shift, but couldn’t really do anything because she had 6 other patients to care for.
After her shift ended, Sherika managed to somehow get the patient and her dad connected. The patient was so thankful to her. The next day Sherika went back to check on the patient, and she saw the patient was still there and shared with her that because of her help, her dad was able to find a distant friend who would pick her up and give her shelter and support. I just want to recognize her for her care and compassion towards this patient. She went the extra mile and helped this patient. This patient may not be able to express how grateful she was towards her care due to barriers and lack of knowledge on how to do it, this is why I want to make sure she gets the recognition. I want to add a quote that applies to her “That person who helps others simply because it should or must be done, and because it is the right thing to do, is indeed without a double, a real superhero.”
