She was actively engaged in my learning, teaching me how to prioritize my patients, how to communicate with the healthcare team, delegate tasks, and, most of all, how to advocate for my patients.
I was nearing the end of my orientation on the Med/Surg floor. Just the mere thought of me being on my own put me in so much stress, anxiety, and nervousness. As someone who grew up in a different country with zero work experience, I was lost and wasn't sure if I was going to make it. One night, I had this amazing and brilliant preceptor, Sheryl Biglin. Having her was a pivotal moment that changed my perspective and approach to things. She was actively engaged in my learning, teaching me how to prioritize my patients, how to communicate with the healthcare team, delegate tasks, and, most of all, how to advocate for my patients. She even goes to the extent of explaining the whys (rationales) behind the nursing interventions that were done. Spending a few weeks with her, (which was made possible by my manager and nurse educator), made a big impact on my orientation. Because of her, I was no longer consumed by fright about work on my days off, and I could not be more thankful for that. Little by little, I gained more confidence to go off on my own. I am just so thankful for her, and even after my orientation, I still go to her for advice on nursing interventions that I am not sure of. I really look up to her and wish to be like her one day. So far, she is the most thorough nurse that I've met on the floor.
