I would like to recommend one of our colleagues—Shi Dayong.
"The God" is an internet expression which some people give to those men who are tall and handsome. In our Operation Room (OR), Dayong is often referred to as "The God", not because of how tall and handsome he is (although he is), but mainly because he is a great helper, very brave yet scrupulous and efficient. I would like to share a story about him:
It was already midnight that day when the OR was still as busy as a bazaar. It is routine that work on the night shift in the OR continues all night, but calling the sixth scrub nurse on the on-call prioritizing list is very unusual. It means an extra heavy patient load. Shi was also surprised to get the phone call that night. In this situation our department was already swamped with three other emergency surgeries from orthopedics, gynecology and neurology in process, but ER was sending yet another patient who needed emergency open heart surgery. Our team leader felt sorry for waking Shi Dayong in the middle of the night by phone, but she had to. She was working out in her head the words to say in order to get Shi's understanding, but to her surprise, Shi said, "I'll be there as soon as I can" as soon as he picked up the phone, without any hesitation or redundant questions. This simple sentence comforted us a lot on such a busy night.
Shi appeared in the OR 20 minutes later dripping with sweat. God knows how he made it there from his home in such a short time which usually takes half an hour! He quickly scrubbed in for the heart surgery. It was so complicated that after a few hours of operating, the surgeon reached the point where he wanted to give up. It was at that time when the families were desperate and helpless, that Shi stood up and encouraged everyone to try one more time by saying, "We are their only hope". That was what we all did for the next 10 hours trying our best to rescue the patient. Our work finally paid off when the patient was transferred to the ICU with stable vital signs.
This is just one of the countless successful rescue stories that occur in OR, and Shi is only one of the individuals on the team who works so diligently. For patients, his perseverance is their hope. For us, his uncomplaining attitude, his help and sharing of the burden are really something we are all grateful for. For surgeons, the skillful scrub nurse, who encourages the team, is indispensable, especially when in the battle against death. One endeavor, one time of trying, one encouraging word, and one time of persevering. It may seem like very little if you do it just once, but what's particular about Shi is that he continuously does this, day after day, time and time again. This is "The God" in our OR—Shi Dayong!
