Sadly, I am no stranger to being a patient here at Cleveland Clinic, and many other hospitals over a span of 28 years. I will have to say that overall, Cleveland Clinic has the best nursing out of all the hospitals I’ve encountered. Over the last year, I have probably spent easily 100 days there, on every floor you have. I feel that whomever is in charge of hiring the staff, they don’t just fill the spots needed. They hire, and train, only the best staff. I wanted to let you know that I feel this nominee is at the top of all the nurses I’ve had there. First, she stood out to me by her attention to detail. The first time she was my nurse, she asked me questions to make sure she understood my case and my needs. She was thorough with her initial examination of my incision, central line, and the basic stuff that I know is supposed to be done, but doesn’t happen as much as it used to. She made sure that everything was as it should be. She made sure to remember, not only my scheduled meds, but also my PRN ones. I didn’t have to call for her when anything was due. If it was my PRN ones, she would come in a few minutes before it was due to ask me if I needed anything. For me personally, this is the most important thing. Every patient has different needs and priorities. She stood out also for her compassion. I could just feel that she truly cared about my health. During the days I had her as my nurse, we had multiple challenges with getting meds from the pharmacy, tests/procedures being delayed without any communication, and getting my discharge stuff correct. I don’t know how many patients she was responsible for on those days, but she took the time to make sure all these things were corrected, and constantly communicated with me about what was going on while handling all her other patients I think if I had any other nurse, these things would have taken much longer to get taken care of. I have rarely requested a nurse for the next day at any hospital I’ve ever been at. I know scheduling is probably a nightmare each day, but with the frustration I had with the doctor side of things, I decided to request her. When I got to the person who handled the scheduling for the next day, I was told that other patients had requested her as well, but he would try to fulfill my request. Luckily, the next day, she was assigned to my room. When I was told others had requested her, that told me that she was like this with all her patients. I am writing this now because it’s been on my mind, but when I’m at home, a lot other things come up, and I end up not having the time to sit down and write this. But I’m here at Cleveland Clinic, unfortunately not on her part of the third floor. I’m in the Oncology section. I find it important to speak out when I have someone exceptional in any industry. Most people only say something when it’s negative. I believe Shirene is a true DAISY Nurse.
