The SICU Team at OSU Wexner Medical Center is amazing! Working in such a stressful environment day in and day out can be difficult, but when you have a great group of individuals working together caring for patients, it makes all the difference in the world. Although there are many stories that could be shared about the nurses in the SICU, one story in particular stood out from the rest.
The story is about nurses who went above and beyond for a grieving family, and is best told in the e-mail from the charge nurse who worked that night. Although the e-mail explains what the lead nurse Patti did after the shift, all members involved worked together that night and came up with the idea together for the family. The email:
As you all know, we were all deeply affected by the 8 year old son of the patient in B-19 this weekend. He had such a tough time and we brainstormed at length for some way to help him get through this as there is nothing in place here to assist children in dealing with the death of a parent. Thank you to all who helped figure out a way to fingerprint both the patient and the little boy. The boy was clearly quite pleased with being able to do this. Patti Carter took the thumbprint of the boy's father to the jewelry store today in Powell. The store happened to be closed but a lady that works there happened to come to the door as Patti approached. When Patti started to explain the situation and what she was looking for, the lady graciously and quickly told her to come in, being so very touched by Patti's story about a group of nurses wanting to do something so special for this boy. Her father happened to have died when she was 11 and wished that something like this could have been done for her then. Patti was able to pick out and pay for a sterling silver oval that will have the thumbprint on one side and the word "Daddy" as well as date of birth and death on the other. The price for the necklace came to approx. $200.00. While Patti says it's not necessary, if any of you would care to donate any sum of cash to Patti to assist with the cost, it would be appreciated.
After Patti got home the lady from the store called her. She said that her son was so touched by our story that they will be setting the thumbprint in white gold instead of sterling at no increase in cost. She said if a group of nurses could donate so could they! Isn't that amazing?! God Bless you all! ... We forget sometimes the impact we have as nurses, and how many lives are touched. This is truly what DAISY is all about.
