Sonia cared for a patient with pneumonia. A repeat CXR was ordered. The patient was alert, oriented and able to walk to the litter to go down for his x-ray. Shortly after, a code blue was called in radiology. Sonia immediately called the department to see if it was her patient and it was. She requested that I cover her other patients so she could go assist as the patient's primary RN. Sonia provided valuable information about the patient to the team and assisted the radiology staff with the code. The patient did not survive. Once the patient was pronounced, the room cleared and Sonia was one of few staff who remained with the patient. She removed the ET tube and wiped him clean. Sonia was then asked to bring the deceased back to our unit to provide post mortem care. Sonia stayed with her patient the entire time and provided him the respect he deserved. She modestly shared her actions with me, displaying the utmost concern and care for her patient. She notified the family of the events and provided comfort to them over the phone. She was exceptional throughout the entire event and I am honored to work by her side.
