I had a patient that presented to the ED to have her wound vac replaced on Thanksgiving. The patient's colostomy bag was leaking so she went to another ED where it was replaced. She had removed her wound vac prior to her arrival because stool had leaked under the dressing and she was told she had to come to ER at Mercy Hospital Jefferson to have it replaced.
Due to the holiday, wound care was not available and no staff in the ED had experience with wound vac's. I called and spoke with Sonya on Med 2 who graciously came to the ED to reapply the wound vac. The patient was very happy and thanked me multiple times that we were able to help her and stated she always received wonderful care at our hospital and that she should have just come here in the first place.
