During a recent stay at Advocate South Suburban Hospital, I received a colostomy for various reasons but a lifestyle change as a result was warranted. Normally the Wound Care nurse visits and provides the initial education necessary to maintain the collection device and process. Due to in-patient dialysis, on-going procedures, etc. this education process (to be attended by my spouse) was interrupted several times and while I received the basics, it was incomplete and out of the control of Sophia. She did, on our last contact, provide me and my wife with her contact information.
On leaving South Suburban, I was provided Home Care services. Some of which was helpful in learning how to change the collection device; unfortunately, the attending Home Care nurse had neither the supplies nor the expertise for my needs. This resulted in damage to my skin and several embarrassing experiences with leaking and total containment failure.
We contacted Sophia who arranged to meet us at South Suburban, very early on her own time, to complete the education. Her insight and caring attitude left me with the confidence that the correct device and changing methodology would in the future eliminate concerns over leakage and, if necessary, how to deal with such an issue.
Sophia discussed the wounded areas of my skin, why it happened and how to treat for recovery, actually demonstrating the products and applications necessary.
Upon my return to South Suburban the following morning, the current device developed some leakage; Sophia attended to the problem with a device from a different manufacturer that seems to be the answer to my needs, subsequent daily visits and a change of the device by Sophia confirm her expertise and care.
She has contacted the manufacturer to provide additional samples and contacted Home Care to order sufficient quantities of all products necessary for my needs.
Sophia is an exemplary example of South Suburban's quality service to its patients in their distressful and challenging times.
She is far more than a nurse for us as far as we are concerned.
