There was a young girl on Pediatrics for a behavioral problem and she would kick, spit and scratch at you. She also would bang her head on the floor, wall, door and bed when she broke out in tantrums. Stephanie would go in and hold her in her arms and rock her while calmly speaking with her until she settled down. I never saw Stephanie lose her patience with this child and I have seen this many times with all Stephanie’s patients. I have seen Stephanie’s kindness and opening of her heart on many occasions. This is why I believe Stephanie Corbin is deserving of The DAISY Award.
Interestingly, when the DAISY Award Committee read Stephanie’s nomination each of us had a story to tell about working with Steph.
Mary in the Emergency Dept. told how Stephanie was instrumental in developing a plan of care for children with psychiatric needs. There has been an influx of children with behavioral problems who enter the hospital through the ED and are then admitted to Pedi. A need for a defined way to interact with these children was identified. A collaboration with Bradley (Children’s Psychiatric) Hospital was formed and Stephanie helped to implement this.
Eileen from The Birthing Center speaks of Steph’s compassion when working on Pedi and The Birthing Center. She was especially impressed with the nurturing care Steph provided to an emotionally impaired teenager. She showed an abundance of care and compassion and reassurance to this young girl.
While working with Steph on the Rehabilitation Unit one day I asked her to help me reposition a patient- a middle aged woman who had suffered a debilitating stroke. After we had repositioned and made the patient comfortable I started to leave the room. I looked back to see Steph holding the patient’s hands, looking into her eyes and giving her words of encouragement. As many nurse/patient interactions as I have seen- this particular one stayed with me. I now know it exemplified the compassionate care frequently exhibited by Steph.
The compassionate care of the bedside nurse is what the DAISY Award celebrates.
That is why today we proclaim Stephanie Corbin Newport Hospital’s DAISY Award Extraordinary Nurse.
