When emotions were high, Steph was not only compassionate and understanding but also supportive and went out of her way to provide a safe space for us.
My father-in-law, B, was diagnosed with CLL in August of 2022. All of my coworkers heard my weekly updates and supported me through his treatments and tests over the months. In June of 2023, my father-in-law was admitted to HUPs Oncology ICU. Stephanie Dembik was his nurse in the ICU, which happened to be his last hours on this earth. The Oncology ICU also happens to be the unit where I work as a nurse, and Steph happens to be one of the coworkers who heard our trials and tribulations leading up to that day. I always knew Steph was an exceptional nurse. I've worked alongside her since I started in the ICU 4 years ago. But this time, it was different and showed me just how truly special and phenomenal she is. My family and I feel very blessed to have had her be with us in those final, excruciating hours. She advocated for the comfort of my father-in-law - making sure he felt no pain; she comforted my mother-in-law, C, on the hardest day of her life. She talked with us about the man that B was, laughed, and reminisced with my mother-in-law, husband, and brother-in-law about the kind of husband and father he was. When emotions were high, Steph was not only compassionate and understanding but also supportive and went out of her way to provide a safe space for us. As her colleague, she never made me feel uncomfortable and treated me with the utmost respect and kindness and helped me grieve. She gave me the gift of being B's daughter-in-law, not B's nurse, something I struggled with since the time of his diagnosis- and for that, I will forever be grateful to her.
