I saw Steve now sitting with the patient’s husband, quiet and present. The husband was smiling as he was talking to Steve. I can only imagine him sharing special stories, memories, and moments he and his wife had shared.
Steve is a regular shift Charge Nurse he impresses me as always being approachable with any concern or question. Steve ALWAYS demonstrates an “even” and calm demeanor under ALL circumstances. He is smart and professional in ALL interactions and management of our very busy and dynamic unit.
The Observation, the day that will forever stay in my mind. Steve was caring for a patient who was coding, a code that lasted over three hours with short periods of hopes of revival. Several team members were present throughout this event, all contributing greatly.
I witnessed the husband sitting in a chair against the wall, so very distraught. This is where Steve had set up for him so he could be close and see all efforts to save his wife. Steve was performing skillful chest compressions.
After all attempts, the code ended. The team dispersed, the room quieted, and emergency equipment was removed. The hallway was now empty, and patient care continued in the surrounding rooms. The patient, who just recently passed away, is now motionless and extubated. She had been cleaned and cared for, now lay aside a half-drawn curtain. I saw Steve now sitting with the patient’s husband, quiet and present. The husband was smiling as he was talking to Steve. I can only imagine him sharing special stories, memories, and moments he and his wife had shared.
Steve was sitting close and leaning toward the man, giving him his full attention to his every word. I BELIEVE this was a very true and giving moment of a SPECIAL NURSE. He is the epitome of a DAISY NURSE in action!
My hope is that he is recognized by being chosen for the DAISY AWARD, showing extraordinary compassion after participating in a code for over 3 hours. This is just one of the moments his compassion presents. Steve has been there for many of us; he HAS a “Healer's Touch.”
