Steve Brooks is the Unit Charge Nurse for CVICU. I have worked with Steve for 17 years now. I haven't met a patient to this day that Steve wasn't able to make smile. Steve is always laid back, he runs day to day operations for our unit with ease. Steve is the go-to guy for all the staff. He can put an IV in anyone. He always helps the other staff with mobility of their patients, completing care when they are overwhelmed, and just supporting them when they are unsure of their care and need further reinforcement. Steve meets each patient's family daily and makes them feel comfortable during the 4-6 hours wait for their loved one to come out of surgery. He jokes with them and always brings up that he is an Alabama fan. If they are for another school he jokingly tells them he won't hold that against them. He always has them smiling and laughing by the end of the conversation. He has a positive working relationship with all the physicians and coordinates and advocates for the best interest of his patients. Steve is also a great leader and teaches other newer staff every day. He works hard at creating a healthy work environment and hosts co-workers at his lake house once a year for dinner and boat riding. I can't imagine the CVICU without Steve.
