In addition to her excellent patient care, Suma was compassionate and empathetic to the family and our emotions at a very difficult time.
Some time has passed since my mother, L, passed away in April in the Twywell Ward at Kettering General Hospital. I’ve been meaning to write this DAISY nomination sooner but found it too hard to write, however as the year ends, I’ve found the energy to put down my nomination.
Suma was Deputy Sister on Twywell during April 2024 and provided care, along with her team, to my mum in April this year. My mum was awaiting immunotherapy for her cancer when she was admitted to KGH with a leg infection. She spent time on various wards as she underwent investigations including treatment for a pressure sore acquired during her stay at KGH. We were notified that she had tested positive for hospital acquired COVID-19 and she was moved to a side room on the Twywell Ward. PALS were involved in her case.
Suma demonstrated excellent levels of compassion and care to L and to my father, who spent many days at her bedside. Suma evidenced the KGH values of respect, compassion, accountability, courage, and integrity. A specific example was the attentiveness and ownership that Suma took when the pressure mattress was identified as being faulty and the speed at which she worked to correct this and to ensure clear handover notes for the night team. In addition to providing regular updates on my mum’s health, she also took time to explain to my family what was occurring and what to expect as my mum’s condition deteriorated. Suma was attentive throughout my mum’s stay on Twywell and would stop by at the end of her shift to check in with L and our family and let us know when she’d be back on shift when approaching leave. In addition to her excellent patient care, Suma was compassionate and empathetic to the family and our emotions at a very difficult time.
It is my hope that this nomination helps to recognise the extraordinary work of Suma, and that KGH management are aware of her clear communication and above and beyond attitude.
I wish her all the very best for her future in the medical care provision and would happily support and recommend her for this award, or for further recognition through other suitable pathways.
