Summer promptly brought me a coffee, some water, and some kind words about how tough the situation was and that it was okay to be emotional. I am so thankful for that small moment of kindness and understanding.
My dad was brought into the ER and swiftly moved into emergency surgery. After his initial surgery, he was moved into the ICU and put on a ventilator while awaiting a second surgery. After his second surgery, he was still on the ventilator while healing. Summer was his nurse for the 3 days that he spent in the ICU. She provided amazing care for my dad, but what I was most impressed with was the way she also provided care to my dad’s caregivers and team of support. She answered all the questions that my mom and I had and spent extra time explaining processes and the status of my dad’s recovery.
My dad was overwhelmed and scared, not remembering his admittance into the ER and not knowing about his surgeries or being put on the ventilator. Summer calmly explained to him his status and did not speak with any condescension even though my dad was not at a point where he was very verbal. There was a specific instance where my dad told me to “go away,” which made me very sad. I know he felt overwhelmed and scared, and I know there is a difficulty when you are in need of so much care in front of your children. I went away for a moment and started crying. Summer promptly brought me a coffee, some water, and some kind words about how tough the situation was and that it was okay to be emotional. I am so thankful for that small moment of kindness and understanding. I know there are many great and caring nurses, but I can imagine that, especially in an environment like the ICU, it can be tough to keep caregivers and family in mind.
I am writing this from the progressive care unit in the hospital where my dad was moved to this morning. My mom was the last caregiver to see Summer, and she was able to give her a big hug. I am hoping that this recognition can act as a big hug from me to Summer since I was unable to give her one!
