Susie is an incredible nurse in the PICU and NICU. I had the privilege of her orienting me a few shifts when I cross-trained to PICU. I was truly inspired. We had an incredibly sick kid who was on 10 different IV medications and drips. Her skill at managing them all when our patient took a turn for the worst was nothing short of miraculous. She never got frazzled, never yelled, never complained even with multiple doctors yelling out different doses and different rates for different drugs. She has an amazing rapport with the patients and families, putting them all at ease in a very stressful environment. Even more importantly, she brings joy to her co-workers. I think this is a vital asset that often goes unrecognized and uncelebrated. Morale on a high acuity unit is paramount to the outcome of our tiniest patients and the satisfaction of their families. Susie brings that to all she works with. She makes me smile. She inspires me to be a better nurse, to be more patient, to laugh more, to care more and to strive more. Coincidently, some of my toughest shifts have been when we work together. There is no other nurse I'd rather have a bad shift with than Susie.
