My husband found out last spring that a stem cell transplant was necessary in order to prolong his life. After several delays requested by the anonymous donor, we arrived at Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland to start the process. When transplant Day arrived, I was filled with apprehension. After so many delays, I worried the cells wouldn't arrive, my husband would develop an infection, etc. A myriad of concerns were swirling around in my head. Then Sydney Halfhill arrived. Her confidence and knowledge of the process were evident from the moment she entered the room. She articulated the process to us in detail and answered many questions. Her explanation of what would transpire over the next 90 minutes was thorough and calming. No medical professional we had seen in the months leading up to this time had provided the details that Sydney shared. She allowed me to record her explanation of the process and gave permission for us to share it with family and friends. She did this with professionalism and kindness. The ninety minutes progressed swiftly as we continued to ask questions while she patiently explained. Sydney displayed enthusiasm for her work and praised the hospital and fellow nurses she works with. Sydney answered every question we had; her answers were crystal clear and invited additional questions. Sydney never tired of answering questions. She even repeated a couple of answers so we could share them with our family. During the process, she was incredibly attentive to ensuring a successful transplant of every last drop.
