Her title is "Nurse Silvy", but she is so much more than that. We first met Silvia Devasia 6 months ago when my father in law was moved from Oncology to Telemetry due to a heart concern and monitoring needed. I should mention that my father is not the easiest patient to care for. He has stage 4 NSCLC that has metastasized to the bones, end-stage COPD, as well as many other issues associated with his condition and age. Care for him in his current medical state is even more complex due to the combination of doctors treating him and the daily medications being prescribed. Silvy took the time to validate all medicines, relay any changes with his condition to the doctors, and ensured that his stay was made as comfortable as possible. These are daily duties of a nurse, but the attention she showed this man confirmed for him that he was more than just a patient, but a human being.
A few months later we were back in the hospital and admitted to ICU. Silvy happened to be on that floor. She immediately came over when she saw us, remembered all our names and helped get him settled. She is a very sympathetic and understanding nurse who knows how to support the patient and their family during very difficult times. Her pleasant, upbeat personality and humbleness gave us all hope. My family and I want to sincerely thank Silvy for the care, compassion, kindness, patience and understanding that she gave our father. It means so very much to us and we couldn't have asked for a better nurse to care for our dad. She is truly a special person, and is a blessing to all.
