Tahir was able to provide gentle, compassionate care for the patient and family. Not only this, but he was still able to provide gentle, compassionate care to the nurses on this shift.
Tahir has been an assistant nurse manager for the PICU nightshift team for many, many years. He is one of the “under the radar” kind of guys. He comes to work and deals with the hand he gets dealt, no matter what. If you know what the PICU brings some nights, you would be in awe of the type of leadership Tahir demonstrates.

One night I was looking at the future assignments, and I was feeling a little overwhelmed just thinking about the night that Tahir may have, with the PICU being full with 19 patients. He was going to be in charge, with a young nursing staff looking up to him, with a two patient assignment himself. It was not an easy assignment either! In this patient assignment, it included a very ill oncology patient, who later that month ended up passing away. Tahir walked into the unit that night with an “I’ve got this.” His attitude was “I am always good with whatever assignment or challenge that is handed to me, we will get through any 12-hour shift.” During this shift, he was able to provide gentle, compassionate care for the patient and family. Not only this, but he was still able to provide gentle, compassionate care to the nurses on this shift. This is just one example of his leadership style, which is very effective in the PICU.

PICU is his calling, and his dedication shows. I have had the privilege of working with Tahir on nightshift, and I am amazed at how smooth things run with him there. If there is a room to set up, you will see Tahir pushing the beds to get them set up. He may not say much, but his actions speak louder than his words. Of course, when he does have something to say, everyone listens! He is an exceptional asset to the PICU, and I truly believe that he contributes greatly to the compassionate care that is provided on a daily basis. He has the gift of “rolling with the punches,” and teaching the nurses that while everything may not be “perfect” all the time, the team will get through anything. He has everyone’s back, and the team knows this. He seems to balance it all, and he is a true DAISY Nurse! If he is honored, he would be humble and carry on like it was any given day. Tahir, you are an inspiration to us all!
