Ms. Kearney was working with me in the surgical clinic recently. During that clinic, I saw two very complex homeless veterans, both with advanced cancers. When she brought both to my examination room, she did so with a bottle of water and a packet of crackers. Both of these men were clearly hungry, as both vigorously ate the crackers throughout the interview. I was struck by the kindness and compassion to have thought about doing that for these gentlemen. They were both moved and grateful for the gesture, and I was and remain impressed.

I struggle to pick out which of the I-Care values the actions of Ms. Kearney represent most. In some aspect, her actions exemplify them all, but I would say Commitment, Advocacy, and Respect were most strongly exemplified. It was extremely thoughtful and professional and definitely shows a commitment to being veteran-centric in all aspects. It certainly advanced the interest of these veterans and demonstrated a high level of respect, seeing them as human beings and not just another number.

If we could bottle what she demonstrates, a lot of the problems at this institution could be solved.
