We had a patient on N4G that came in with a C1 fracture after being in a hit and run motor vehicle accident. The patient was given discharge orders days later and that was when the family and patient began to show signs of anxiety and sheer panic. The family had been told by the neurosurgeon how dangerous this injury was if he didn't wear the neck brace or if he had a fall. Tammy began speaking to the wife who was in the hallway crying. She asked her about what their fears were with taking the patient home and the wife explained. Tammy spent about 45 minutes speaking to the wife and daughter of the patient sharing her own personal stories to ease their anxiety. Tammy went back to the patient's room and was educating the whole family. Tammy had put an Aspen collar (neck brace) on the daughter of the patient so that they could practice taking it off and putting it on. At this point, it was a completely different emotion that was felt in their room. Everyone was more at ease and even laughing. Tammy also took the time to show the family how to use the gait belt and again placed the gait belt on another family member and let the wife practice how to use it. I'm very appreciative to have co-workers like Tammy who are willing to go above and beyond to educate our patients. This patient ended up leaving that afternoon and the family was at ease due to all the time that Tammy spent educating them.
