Mrs. Chapman shows extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care to any patients she is assigned to. One of the patients on the unit became combative and challenging. The nurses thought the patient was having a bad day. Mrs. Tanya took the time and was able to talk the patient down where she could assess the patient. Using her critical thinking skills and assessment knowledge, Mrs. Chapman called a rapid response for the patient as it turned out he was very sick and needed to be transferred to MICU.
She also specializes in wound care and is competent in IV therapy. Never once has she said no, to helping a coworker start an IV when it fails/infiltrated or a challenging hard stick patient. She's always available to provide her knowledge on wounds when asked. For example, I had two patients with challenging wounds. There was no consult ordered, but Mrs. Chapman assessed those patients and provided me with the recommendations.
Mrs. Chapman is part of the Nurse-Chief Resident Communication committee. She meets with them once a month. She listens and writes down all the issues/concerns/incidents the RN staff nurses have with the medical team or patient care. She advocates and follows up with the medical doctor teams to ensure that her patients receive the correct orders, medications, and plan. She would offer the same help to her colleagues when we are unsure about a questionable order.
Mrs. Chapman has expressed her desire to be charge when possible. As charge nurse, she demonstrates extraordinary skills when ensuring fair assignment, staffing, and advocating for her 2DGS team when necessary. She remains professional no matter what, and often jumps in and assumes care of a patient if needed. She has never complained about her assigned patients. Mrs. Chapman exceeds, practices, and demonstrates all of the I CARE principles and above every time she works. She would say, "I am just doing my job", but Mrs. Chapman is a true DAISY Nurse.
