She changed my life simply by maintaining an authentic presence, listening without judgment or bias, validating my feelings, providing a shoulder to cry on, and, more importantly, taking the time to educate me on what the liver transplant would entail.
I am currently in stage four liver failure. I was feeling hopeless, as if I wouldn't even make the transplant list. I was honestly considering hospice. My last hospitalization was last week. I was blessed to be placed on the fifth floor. On my first day there, I had Taylor as my nurse, and on the last day, I also had Taylor as my nurse. She changed my life simply by maintaining an authentic presence, listening without judgment or bias, validating my feelings, providing a shoulder to cry on, and, more importantly, taking the time to educate me on what the liver transplant would entail. She painted a picture that was much different from what I had researched, and she gave me hope. She allowed me to answer questions; she never appeared rushed. She was there in the moment, holding space for me. Taylor embodies all the core values of Mayo and should serve as a role model for what the standard of a Mayo nurse should be. She advocated for me when needed and encouraged me to advocate for myself when necessary. The greatest gift she gave me was hope, which is far more powerful than any medication. Taylor exudes love and compassion. She was able to create an authentic space while being present in the moment and genuinely caring for me with compassion, adopting a holistic approach.
