How can a parent cope with the new diagnosis of brain cancer in their child? We did not know, but when we met Taylor on the 7th floor Special Care Unit we found that the care of a great nurse could ease the shock! He had severe vertigo, nausea, and headaches and was awaiting MRI and neurosurgery. His nausea was poorly controlled, and she facilitated getting extra medication rotated so that he could rest a little. When he could no longer tolerate the pills by mouth she intervened to get IV medication. She shared experiences she had with other brain cancer patients. She had such a calm demeanor that it helped us to stay focused on him and his health. She approached him with compassionate words and care. She understood when he could not open his eyes to communicate with her. She performed her duties efficiently and quietly and often times in the dark since the light was intolerable. When he came out of surgery and went to the ICU she came by to check on him. She even visited him on the floor before discharge. She truly went above and beyond to make him as comfortable and calm as possible. She did the same for us as we faced the unfathomable. She would never expect to receive the DAISY Award because this all comes so naturally to her. She deserves this honor!
