She was a true advocate for my dad and took his welfare very seriously, even when the Hospitalist did not agree with her concern about him being moved to rehab.
My Dad fell and broke his hip in 3 places. The doctor successfully repaired his hip in surgery, but there were complications due to his COPD and Dementia conditions. Terra immediately put me at ease when she walked into my dad’s hospital room. She was attentive to my dad and his needs while ensuring that I understood what was going on with him. The plan, that day, was to move my dad to a nearby rehab center due to his hip surgery as soon as transport was available. As the day progressed, my dad was getting progressively worse, and I was scared that if he were moved to the rehab facility, they would not be able to give him the level of care he required. As other friends and my sister visited that day, they raised the same concerns and encouraged me to push for him to stay in the hospital.

As the attending nurse for the day shift, Terra was very responsive with how my dad was doing and reached out to respiratory several times for breathing treatments and check-ins as she felt like he was struggling to breathe and needed the treatments. She was a true advocate for my dad and took his welfare very seriously, even when the Hospitalist did not agree with her concern about him being moved to rehab. As the EMTs were in the hallway waiting to transport him to the rehab center, she escalated to her nursing manager with the end result of the doctor letting the EMTs leave and my dad stay in the hospital. Later that day, the Rapid Response Team was called to his room due to breathing difficulties, and he was moved to the ICU. Terra stayed with my family and friends throughout the entire frightening experience. She followed us to the ICU and stayed well past her shift to ensure we understood what was going on and that we were okay. Terra was sympathetic, empathetic, and simply there to hug us. I know in my heart that if she had not taken the initiative and leadership of the situation to keep my dad at the hospital, he would not have made it through the night. It is not often that you find the qualities that Terra displayed during our ordeal; she was truly amazing. Thank you, Terra, for your kindness. You are a special nurse that we do not always see. Patients and families are extremely lucky to have you as their advocate and caretaker.
