She took the time to get to know him, and they had such fun making each other laugh!
"I met Terri when my husband was admitted for a lung infection due to his AML. She was assigned to him for a few days in a row at the start of his stay, and in that really short time, she was able to build a great deal of trust that carried through with the rest of his time in the hospital. My husband has had numerous long hospital stays prior to this and had many nurses, but none like Terri. They had such a rapport. Terri made sure that when she was working, she had him as a patient. She always made sure to be in the room when the doctors rounded so she could answer our questions and clarify any information. She took the time to get to know him, and they had such fun making each other laugh! She treated my husband like a person, not just a patient. Even when things started to get scary, she was always there to reassure him of exactly what was going on and why. He had to have an unexpected surgery where he would need general anesthesia, and Terri stayed well past her work hours to make sure that we knew what was going to happen during the procedure and what the outcome was hoping to be. She even had his night nurse text her, regardless of the time, once he was back in the room to assure her that he had made it through. Leading into the Thanksgiving holiday, she took it upon herself to wear harvest-themed t-shirts just to bring a smile to my husband's face. I don't know what they were talking about that brought this on, but I do know that he appreciated it so much and each day looked forward to seeing what shirt she would be wearing. After that, we had an awful day where we were told that his illness was terminal. We elected to hospice at home, and Terri sat with the Social Worker and me to go through what that would look like and what would be expected of me. She saw to it that my husband would have the necessary items to make his last days at home comfortable. I feel that Terri was put with my husband for a reason. He needed someone like her to be taking care of him. He had so much respect for her honesty and transparency, as she never sugar-coated anything, but also for her personality and quick wit. She helped make some really bad days in the hospital more bearable for him. Terri set the "Barr" really high (pun intended), and I will forever be grateful that she came into our lives when she did. She is truly an outstanding example of what nursing is all about." Follow-up Email from the wife later that month: "It is with a heavy heart that I write this email to you and let you know that my husband passed peacefully with me by his side. I cannot eloquently put into words what your care meant to us. You are not only an absolutely amazing nurse but a wonderful human being. I am so grateful that you were a part of our journey, as I don't know what we would have done without you there to help shepherd us through. My husband had a lot of hospital stays and many nurses, but you were by far the one he trusted most and the one that could get him to smile when he felt the worst. We appreciated you so very much!"
