Now, how to ensure a very sick child could be discharged to the care of her parents, and how to assure she was safe for the flight? This nurse quickly replied selflessly "I will go with them, I will volunteer my time to help."
This team member is so deserving of a DAISY Award. She goes above and beyond on a daily basis in the PICU. On this occasion she truly helped to make a miracle happen. H is a beautiful two-year-old who has been in the hospital since July. Our team in the PICU worked day and night to help H during her stay. H has a rare disorder that has now affected her liver, and hope was closing in on her short life. H's parents learned about an experimental treatment in Canada. The family applied and H was accepted. The parents were told H was on the list and it would be 1 to 3 months before H was able to go.
The mom received a call that there was a cancellation, and if H could arrive in Canada by next week, she would be able to start treatment now. There were a few obstacles to making this happen. One was how to get a very sick child in the PICU to Canada. The team started reaching out to many medical transport companies and the flight would cost the parents $80,000. H's parents were lost. How would they get $80,000 in a few days? This nurse thought outside the box and sent a text to the president of the SJCH Foundation. She, of course, responded with, “Tell me more,” and all of the pieces of travel came together on a very lucky day.
H's parents received a call that H could receive a rushed passport and the president of the SJCH Foundation called with a flight company willing to donate their time and a private plane donation. Now, how to ensure a very sick child could be discharged to the care of her parents, and how to assure she was safe for the flight? This nurse quickly replied selflessly "I will go with them, I will volunteer my time to help." This nurse's family and her faith are very strong and always supportive of her. She is well-versed in Mission trips and giving back. Her parents do mission work in Africa, and her husband is a youth pastor. Giving back and thinking selflessly of the needs of others is a mantra she lives by.
This nurse got her affairs in order with her husband and her two boys so her family would be ok while she was away. I feel her selfless act is a true example of a nurse going above and beyond. She was not only supportive of H but also of her parents. She truly exemplifies what an Extraordinary Nurse is especially when it comes to compassion and kindness.
