Once in the room, Tigran's presence was comforting, calming, supportive, and confident. Not only does this help put the family at ease it puts staff at ease.
As a child life specialist, we often rely on bedside nurses for appropriate referrals and upcoming procedures. Tigran consistently utilizes us, works with us, and is also willing to bring us in as an additional layer of support for the patients and families. While the example, I will use is a specific example, it is a situation that has happened numerous times with Tigran. Tigran arrived to the Rehab unit to place an IV for an anxious patient. The bedside RN had not informed me of the IV prior to IV team arriving. When I saw Tigran I asked for a couple of minutes to prepare the patient, he did so without hesitation and offered different options to best support the patient and family. When a coping plan was established, Tigran agreed to it without hesitation. Once in the room, Tigran's presence was comforting, calming, supportive, and confident. Not only does this help put the family at ease it puts staff at ease. When Tigran is the one doing an IV placement I feel confident that my child life assessment will be heard and valued and that the procedure will go as smoothly as possible. He is willing to participate in comfort positioning, ensures the patients are comfortable prior to the IV placement, and is a wonderful educator to patients, families, and staff. I have been able to see Tigran help a very anxious patient feel more comfortable by allowing them to play with the vein finder or as Tigran likes to refer to it a "lightsaber" prior to it being used on the patient to ensure they feel comfortable with the medical equipment. Small moments like this are what make Tigran an absolute pleasure to work with.
