He took an interest in our needs, even when he was not assigned to us – stopping in our room to see how he was doing or talking with me in the hallway.
During an extended stay at 5-South Memorial, Tim Estep was my husband’s nurse for multiple shifts and took care of our every need on the day shift. He took great care during handoff to the night shift nurse to explain everything about my husband, including his history, which was extensive, and how we were managing his care. My husband’s room was close to the nurse’s desk, so I was able to overhear the handoff. He did this with anyone new to my husband who was coming on for the night shift, and he always brought in the night shift nurse to introduce us before he left for the day. He always inquired about questions we had, followed up consistently, and one afternoon pulled in the rolling computer cart to review specific information we had questions about, and helped me research a couple of questions before we inquired of the medical team. He took an interest in our needs, even when he was not assigned to us – stopping in our room to see how he was doing or talking with me in the hallway. He took time with us; I felt he always took whatever time necessary so that we felt cared for and taken care of, and we were comforted to know that he was our advocate with researching or inquiring about our questions. He was by far the most attentive to our needs throughout our 12-day stay. But probably the most significant thing for me personally was that after an incredibly emotional day, he took me aside and told me that I had been doing everything right for my husband. He said I had done a tremendous job as his caretaker, his advocate, and his researcher and that I had been doing everything right. He said he wasn’t sure anyone had told me that, but he wanted me to know that he recognized it. That 5-minute conversation meant so much to me. I knew I was very active in my husband’s care, but this nurse was the only one who acknowledged it.
