A little over a month ago, we had an extremely traumatic code 99 on our unit. This was a patient who was to be discharged earlier that day but wanted to spend an extra day here for a little more therapy. Unexpectedly, the patient had a sudden and severe change in condition. Unfortunately, this patient did not survive. The family came in and was extremely upset as this was unexpected. The staff was visibly upset as well.
Tina Beaver came to the unit and approached the family. She began to tell the family that she had taken care of their loved one a day or two ago and she shared that experience with them. The staff stated that this comforted the family and that some of them were even able to smile. Then Tina performed a short prayer service with the family and staff.
The staff, who was still visibly upset the next morning, stated that is was one of the most touching moments that they had ever experienced. They said that the family deeply appreciated this act of kindness as well.
When the staff told me this, I felt as though Tina was a special angel that night and brought so much comfort to everyone during such a sad and traumatic time. We are fortunate to have such a kind and compassionate nurse in Tina.
