Toby Curtiss is a Charge Nurse in the Emergency Department, no matter what the day brings Toby does great balancing out the acuity and workload between her staff to the best of her ability, however, in the ER this is not always the best-case scenario. One shift we had a rough workload, juggling multiple critically ill patients along with multiple aggressive and mentally unstable patients. As usual, Toby made herself available to staff and was willing to help to ensure every patient was being cared for effectively. Toby has this way with her calming demeanor to take charge of any situation and diffuse it. Toby was able to tend to a patient having a severe negative reaction to a medication all while de-escalating an aggressive patient and ensuring that all critically ill patients were being attended by a primary nurse. After a stressful and unpredictable shift, Toby managed to circle back around with her staff and ensure anyone involved was doing okay. Toby illustrates integrity, compassion, respect, and is overall a patient-centered nurse. This particular shift, and Toby's response to every situation, is a perfect illustration of Toby as a nurse and leader.
