The patient probably won't know how important a role Tony played in their care, but his coworkers do, and we are incredibly grateful to call him a coworker and friend.
Tony is a PACU/SDS RN with an extensive critical care background. He has always informally taught his coworkers about critical patient conditions, and in August, we got to see him in action. There was a patient on the med surg floor who went into respiratory failure and needed to be intubated. When transport for the patient arrived to take the patient to a hospital with an ICU, it was clear a knowledgeable RN was needed to make the journey in the ambulance with the patient. Tony was working in the PACU that day and graciously agreed to go in the ambulance over an hour away to safely transport the patient. Because of his selflessness and expertise, the patient got to the ICU safely. He went above and beyond for a patient who wasn't even on his unit in order to secure the best outcome for this patient. I admire him not only for his clinical skills but also for his leadership and teamwork. APD is lucky to have him as a team member.
