Four of his co-workers nominated Tony Green, RN, for the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for his willingness to help, to serve as a resource, and for his bedside manner and critical thinking skills in caring for his patients.
Green said he has found his "niche" in the Emergency Department, where he's worked since 2003. He believes serving his patients and his teammates helps him as much as them.
"I try to do as much as I can to help our patients and our department, just for my own personal wellness as well as for them. The spiritual strength you get from that makes it worthwhile," he said, answering questions between caring for patients and answering phones on a busy morning in the ED.
Formerly employed in a retail clothing business, Green completed nursing school 11 years ago outside of Fresno. He lived in Fresno as a child, then returned with his family to work after completing nursing studies.
"The crew we have in this hospital is one of the best I've ever worked with. Everything here is the best, from the support we get from management, to our system, to the cleanliness of the department," he said.
He likes the variety and the pace of the ED, and says working there gives him the opportunity "to be a lot more directly involved with patient care."
Green said he strives to help create a positive environment. "A lot of times it can be negative. There's a lot of suffering going on in an ED. So my goal is to make it as smooth, positive, and pain-free as I can."
"He is always willing to help when needed, his skills and bedside manner are excellent. He takes the extra time to educate the patients and/or family member, train nursing students, and he's an outstanding resource. He is always willing to go above and beyond, filling in…taking acute patients," one nomination said.
"Tony always shows exemplary skills and is willing to help in all situations. He takes care of all patients without complaint. He is a team player and great source of knowledge. He is a real pleasure to work with and well-deserving of the DAISY Award," another wrote.
Green said he was always fascinated by biology and medicine, and he knows he's doing the right kind of work, in the right department.
"I think we need to not be afraid to give, because the spiritual strength you get from helping your co-workers and your patients far outweighs the physical fatigue you experience. If you're positive, and giving positive back to people, then you'll always have the strength to get through," he said.
