She knew he was having an extra difficult time emotionally, and her soothing voice would keep him calm.
I would like to thank my husband’s nurse, Tracey, for her extra care and compassion above and beyond the already high standards of the nurses at St. Anthony Hospital. My husband had complications from heart failure. He also had extreme hospital delirium that was greatly impacting his care. He needed bed restraints with both the vest and hand restraints as well, which caused him escalating agitation. When Tracey came on shift, she was the only one who could talk him down, thereby enabling them to loosen the hand restraints and allow him to calm down. She told me she would do whatever it took to keep patients from those tight restraints, and she did. He did still need minimal restraints on his hands so he would not pull out his IVs, but she could keep him calm with these. Her extra caring was apparent when she continued to check on him in between her other patients as she knew he was having an extra difficult time emotionally, and her soothing voice would keep him calm. She could see this was difficult for me as well and made sure I was comfortable and also had something to eat so I could stay by his side. After a second shift, Tracey was moved to other patients, but she would poke her head in our room and say hello when passing by. I think it is telling that it has been several months and I am still thinking of her! Not only did she go above and beyond, but she also has an inner quality of compassion that shines through. Thank you.
