Tracy Antkow, took it upon herself to dig in deep and went way beyond a normal inquiry. She began calling all over eastern North Carolina for help with this matter.
I just wanted to make you aware of how strong your nursing staff is. I had a complicated patient who was transferred from the Duplin facility for catheter replacement. Unfortunately, this required a trip to the operating room. The patient was gravely sick. He was a ward of the state and lived in a group home. He had significant neurocognitive issues. With that said, getting consent for him was nearly impossible. His contacts for legal guardianship were not responding or simply could not be contacted. One of the nurses, Tracy Antkow, took it upon herself to dig in deep and went way beyond a normal inquiry. She began calling all over eastern North Carolina for help with this matter. This included East Care, ECU Communications, Duplin Hospital, social services in Duplin and Brunswick County, and the group home. She was simply incredible. She did not stop until she was able to get consent from the head of DSS, which allowed us to proceed with the surgery. Also, I must compliment the nurses on 2 East for their supportive efforts and for getting the patient to the operating room. This patient eventually went downstairs and had his suprapubic tube placed. I also compliment the doctor for allowing us to do the case, as this was a high-risk case that could’ve gone south quickly. In all, the patient made it up to the ICU and is now recovering in our facility. I know you always hear the bad things that happen in our hospital, but I just wanted you to hear something good. I’m truly proud of our hospital and staff for making this happen.
