The care and compassion with which Tracy treated my mom that evening made what was a horrible evening one that was tempered with love, care, and compassion.
My mother, J, was brought to the Valley Hospital Emergency Room in the late afternoon. Tracy was the nurse who cared for her there. My mom had been at a rehab facility for about three weeks prior and came in with extremely low blood pressure and other issues. The care and compassion with which Tracy treated my mom that evening made what was a horrible evening one that was tempered with love, care, and compassion. My mom came into the ER covered in blood from the ambulance ride, she was in extreme discomfort with nausea, low blood pressure and she was constantly needing the bathroom.
Tracy not only cared for my mom in the most professional manners, but she also recognized my mother's humanity, to her she was J, a mom of 4 and grandmother of 6. She knew my mom was hard of hearing, and rather than standing at her bedside and yelling, she knelt and gently spoke to my mom in her ear. She made sure when it was time for my mom to be taken to the MICU that she cleaned her up saying kindly to her "we are going to get you all cleaned up before you, you should not be going up like this." She even transported my mom to her room and was so compassionate with us. I thanked her that evening for her kindness in recognizing my mother's humanity and she cried right along with me when I thanked her.
To my mind, she is the very essence of what I have always believed a nurse should be. She was kind to us, the family and spoke as well to us with kindness, compassion and empathy. Both my daughters came that terrible night to see their grandmother, and Tracy showed them the same kindness. My mom passed away the next day, and in the back of my mind, I knew that this one lovely, kind nurse made some of my mom's last hours on this earth somewhat bearable, given the circumstances.
My mom has been gone for almost three weeks now, but Tracy has been in the back of my mind and I cannot forget her. I feel like it is almost one of my mom's last wishes to thank Tracy and commend her not only as an amazing nurse but also as a kind, compassionate, and loving human being.
