My Grandson was admitted to 5th floor after a harrowing 24 hours. He had surgery at a surgery center on March 23rd and was sent home very soon after surgery. He developed intractable vomiting, severe one-sided headache, confusions, changes in vision and coordination. We brought him to the ER and received excellent care and he was stabilized and admitted to 5th floor. We were so frightened and exhausted and Travis made all the difference to us.
I am a Seton RN and have very high expectations for all aspects of medical and nursing care, and that is of course, heightened when my family is involved. I remember thinking, "I hope my hospital does not let us down." I was quickly reassured when Travis assumed care for my grandson. He was positive and reassuring and demonstrated competence in the admission process, assessment and care provided. I was particularly impressed that he included the family in decision making regarding medication use, asking if we thought he needed pain medication and explaining what medication choices were available. Once my grandson was alert, he also included him in explanations of procedures and in decision making and I think that is unusual with a 16 year old. He reviewed all computer entries with us including lab work and orders.
Travis took extra time to ask us what questions we had, to ask what we needed from him. He reviewed the rounding process with us. He was concerned that my grandson's mom and I were tired and he set up a cot for our comfort. This was no small job as the room was small and he had to move furniture to make this work! The extra concern he showed helped to sustain us so we could care for my grandson. I was proud to be a Seton nurse because of this fine young nurse who represented the vision of our founders and surely showed Humancare when we needed it most.
