My son could see from Trevor's words and ACTIONS that he truly cared about him and wanted to help.
The police brought my scared, intoxicated, and injured teenager into the emergency department for medical clearance before he was to be taken into police custody. He was afraid and hurting and being a million times more than the definition of a "difficult patient." Trevor wasn't even phased; he jumped right in to provide non-judgmental, unbiased nursing care and because of his sincere compassion, my son's attitude started to change, and he calmed down and was cooperative and helpful in his care. My son could see from Trevor's words and ACTIONS that he truly cared about him and wanted to help. Trevor sat with him and talked to him respectfully and kindly and he shared experiences that were inspiring and hope-producing for my son. It was such a breath of fresh air from our other experiences with health care. We have accessed medical care many times related to his struggles with addiction and mental illness and usually, we are met with judgmental and condescending words and careless, borderline mean care. In a society rampant with stress, mental illness, and suicide, health care in our experience was part of the problem and was another place to be hurt, not healed. But not Trevor, he is a real human and a damn good nurse who demonstrated real empathy and compassion as he sat with my son in a godly-low life moment and validated his humanity, not just his illnesses and struggles. Keep it up Trevor, it's people like you who are the spark that ignites the flames of change.
