They then began a collection drive in the ED of new and gently used clothing items to have something on hand to offer.
I’d like to highlight the ED team at South. Stacy Girtley was the champion of this project. They were frequently encountering patients in the ED who were either homeless, indigent, or the victim of a traumatic event who did not have the proper shoes and clothing. Stacy shared that it was a frequent occurrence to see a homeless patient in the ED with no shoes, or with no proper attire for being outside in the inclement weather. Another common problem was dealing with significant foot ailments due to not having dry socks. So Stacy and Theresa Kirk went out and purchased shelving and totes with lids for storing items. They then began a collection drive in the ED of new and gently used clothing items to have something on hand to offer. This grew into one nurse (Danielle) purchasing 25 blankets to hand out during the winter months, and numerous donations of hats, gloves, t-shirts, underwear, and socks to keep on hand. They are continuing the collections and have now identified that shoes are a much-needed item as well. This is a team that truly goes above and beyond for the community that they serve!
