I had a 13-week pregnant patient in recovery, and we could not find the fetal heart tones. Our usual Doppler was missing. The patient became very anxious and started crying stating, "I already lost one baby." I tried to tell her it was just the Doppler, but she was very anxious.
Vanessa Arango suggested we use a regular ultrasound. We borrowed anesthesia's and she found the baby and let the patient view the baby, who was moving. Then we were able to pick up the heart tones which were normal. She also joked with the patient about the baby kicking back at her. The patient immediately became reassured and was able to fall asleep. Vanessa's expertise and compassion were definitely demonstrated.
I was so thankful to have Vanessa and her knowledge of OB, to help with this patient. She made such a difference in this patient's recovery and showed not only her expertise, willingness to help, but also her compassion. Thank you, Vanessa!
