She checked on us on the dot almost every hour, asking us if we needed anything, and did not fail to surprise him with treats and, of course, her welcoming and assuring smile and demeanor.
Our son was admitted for a 24-hour EEG test, and knowing his fear of being at a hospital, we told him we were going for a vacation/sleepover. Upon arriving, Vanessa was the attendant nurse at that time, and she immediately made him feel assured with her maternal instinct and care. She also made sure that we were looked after and followed up on the tiniest details, like lunch for us and arranging for a folding cot to be brought to our room at night to make us feel comfortable. She checked on us on the dot almost every hour, asking us if we needed anything, and did not fail to surprise him with treats and, of course, her welcoming and assuring smile and demeanor.
She was like a doting grandma to our playful little kid, and did not mind at all any of his antics, e.g., he did not like staying in bed, so he was walking around the room carrying the dangling wires. While others seemed to be annoyed at the little boy not staying in bed, especially when they needed to take his vitals or give his meds, Vanessa did not mind at all. She thought it was somehow a good thing that he was up and about and seemed to be enjoying himself.
We somehow looked forward to Vanessa dropping by to check since she presented herself more like a family member than staff and made sure we were well-cared for and reassured. Vanessa made every effort to make us feel at home. She ensured the handover was smooth, introducing the next shift nurse to us and reminding her about the folding cot bed at night, which, for me, was the kindest thought anyone could extend given the circumstances. Vanessa's devoted and skilled passion for our child's well-being made a significant impression on us and made us feel like whatever she was doing was borne out of passion and not merely a call of duty.
