Vanessa reassured me and also explained the different options available if I chose to go that route. She gave me confidence by reassuring me that she would be there to help me through.
For this nomination, I have pondered what I wanted to write and why I felt moved to nominate Vanessa. In the month following our 4th daughter, E, being born, I have been able to reflect back on her birth story and have just kept wanting to honor the hard work and comfort Vanessa gave during her delivery.
Being our fourth delivery, my husband and I had knowledge of what to expect. Only thing is, our first 3 daughters were inductions due to me having GD during those pregnancies. We had set a date, epidurals, and had pretty easy labors. With E, I did not have GD and I was more open to the idea of a natural labor. Our faith is a very central part of our lives and I had been thinking about the idea of not getting an epidural. Little did we know that E was going to be born when she was! We had attended all of our 4th of July festivities and got our older 3 girls to bed. I had been having contractions during the day, but nothing consistent. Though I had thought about natural labor, once the moment was upon me, I was scared and not sure I could do it. This is where Vanessa's experience and wisdom as a nurse came in.
She kindly asked me what my thoughts were going forward. She gave me all the options, which I appreciated, and asked what I felt was the route I wanted to go. I explained my wanting to have a natural birth and also explained my fear of the impending pain and the fear of the unknown. Vanessa reassured me and also explained the different options available if I chose to go that route. She gave me confidence by reassuring me that she would be there to help me through, and she also asked what part I wanted my husband to do during the birthing process. Through communication between all 3 of us, we had a plan in place within minutes, which was a good thing considering E would be born minutes later.
During labor, when I felt like I couldn't continue forward or endure the process that lay ahead of me, Vanessa saw this. She helped to gently redirect me to the foundational pieces I needed to reground myself and endure forward. Looking back, it was Vanessa's experience of years of LDRP work where she could identify when I redirected me and helped me reground myself. E was born at 1:00 am, and we couldn't have been happier.
The labor I experienced has helped me in my faith life beyond what words can say. The graces that Jesus granted me from that experience are ones I will hold dear for the rest of my life. That was only attained through the coaching and helping hand of Vanessa as my nurse. She made me feel empowered to endure the race and respected my decision not only in the moment but also the decision made before I was in the throws of labor. She gave me honest feedback, so I felt safe that I was being given accurate information to process my decisions. Thank you so much, Vanessa! You have given me such a gift in helping me birth E naturally and attain the goal I had been praying about for months beforehand.
