Vanessa Duran is an amazing nurse who truly goes above and beyond. She not only provides excellent care to her patients, but her team player attitude is an asset to everyone at the hospital.
This week she began her regular shifts on 5 West, where she works day shift. She is precepting a new nurse and doing an excellent job showing him all the ways to provide quality care, safely administer medications, and generally take care of an array of complex medical patients on 5 West. She is a terrific role model. On Thursday night, she picked up an extra shift, on night shift, to help out another unit (3N). After her 12 hour night shift, she heard that 5 West was short staffed for the day and came up to stay an extra 4 hours to help out her coworkers. She was helping check CBGs, give morning meds, and respond to all the calls on the unit.
During this time there was a code situation in the Dialysis unit. Who was one of the first people to run back and start administering chest compressions? Vanessa! She stayed to help out in the code and transfer the patient to the ICU. After that, I caught her ambulating another patient around the unit. All this after staying up all night and working almost 16 hours.
Vanessa is a real super-hero! She tirelessly gives of herself and humbly rejects any comments that she has gone above and beyond. Vanessa is always willing to lend a hand to coworkers, sit quietly with a patient who needs someone to listen, or skillfully administer nursing care during emergency situations. I think she is the perfect candidate for the DAISY Award.
