They call her Sunshine. That's just one of many ways people describe Vanessa Heath, Polk Medical Center's first DAISY Award Honoree.
Vanessa was surprised on Thursday while giving report at 7 a.m. at the end of her shift by a parade of co-workers, leadership and family carrying the DAISY banner, flowers, and a handcrafted statue, and playing Tina Turner's "Simply the Best" on an iPad.
"I was overwhelmed...it was surreal," says Vanessa.
Vanessa's co-workers in Medical Surgical Nursing say she is cheerful, eager to work and makes everyone feel her love. She is known as the cheerleader for the staff in that area.
"Patients often ask for her by name," says Pam Atkins, one of her nominators. Pam recalls this story as one example of Vanessa's compassion:
"We recently had a co-worker who had a family illness and was out of work for weeks. They came home from the hospital two days before Christmas. Vanessa not only visited our co-worker frequently, she also organized Christmas dinner for the entire family, collected money and arranged for some of the family's bills to be paid. This caring and compassion is also what she gives to her patients every day."
